Blinded

A photographer's job is, literally, to see. But what happens when this ability to see and process the outside world is cut off, either physically or psychologically?

Over the past two years we were forced by the pandemic into the interior spaces of our homes, unable to engage in the larger social world. But there are also mental cages where the understanding of the world outside is obscured and unable to come into focus.

This series of images photographically represents that state of mind. Our sense of the world is blinded and confused. There are patterns of light and dark but are those patterns making sense? Shadows and light flash across our mental screen as we try to translate these images into a coherent state of mind.

Captured with a Polaroid SX-70 camera on instant film, these images create an immediate exploration of internal chaos when the blinds are drawn.

Interlaced

Assembled from the airwaves, shot from a cathode ray-gun, these images are literally stitched together, interlaced to resemble our collective unconscious. Dreams, fantasies, desires and nightmares are projected onto the screen as an electron dance painted at 15,750 lines per second.

We watch TV both passively and aggressively. Passive because we are receiving from outside our imagination, yet aggressive because we control the conduit to our id. Change channel, pause , repeat, surf, tune in or tune out, we are always searching for a resonance within our own sense of identity.

The images included in this project are a result of photographing an assortment of CRT TV’s with an SX-70 Polaroid camera. The photographs are not manipulated beyond the controls of the TV itself. They reflect both the manifest perceptions of Rico Schwartzberg and the visions of a consumerist society at large. Beamed through the airwaves, vibrating through the megahertz, they are finally captured, making the ephemeral concrete.

Other Minds Festival 22 – Lou Harrison

The late Lou Silver Harrison (1917-2003) was one of America's most original and revered composers, born May 14th, 1917, in Portland, Oregon. The world is celebrating the 100th anniversary of his birth with concerts everywhere. On May 20, Bay Area music non-profit Other Minds will produce a concert devoted exclusively to some major highlights of Harrison’s infectious output. The Noonan Building’s Mark Abramson is currently working as Production Director for Other Minds.

The concert will be held at the Mission Dolores basilica, at the corner of Dolores Street and 16th Street in San Francisco’s Mission District. Among the work to be presented is La Koro Sutro (The Heart Sutra, in Esperanto), for 65 choristers, organ, harp and gamelan, and the Suite for Violin and American Gamelan, co-composed with Richard Dee, and simply put, a solid gold musical masterpiece. Nicole Paiement of San Francisco’s Opera Parallèle will conduct.

48 Pillars was inspired by a chance encounter at Flax with a close-out sale of deep vertical panels, 48” x 12” x 1 5/8”. 24 local Bay Area artists will produce two pieces each on these identically sized panels that will exactly ring the gallery – 48 works total.

is is the second exhibition at Arc Gallery that is essentially a “structural con- straint” show. e other exhibition is our iconic annual, end of summer exhibi- tion, FourSquared. In both exhibitions, the artists are unconstrained in subject matter except to the extent that works need to be a series; but they are constrained in format. It should be visually stunning.

Framed Portugal - A Photography Presentation by Rico Schwartzberg

The Luso-American Education Foundation is presenting the  photography of Rico Schwartzberg from his several trips to Portugal over the past few years. The images will be concentrating on the urban landscape with emphasis on street art as well as the transformative architecture of recent years.

The presentation is titled Framed Portugal at San Jose State University, on Saturday, March 11 at the Compean Student Union Building, Rooms 2A and 2B, 3:30 - 4:30PM. Rico will be co-presenting with Valerie Mendoza (Director of the Photography Program at SJSU).

Henry Jackson Solo Show in Santa Fe

Noonan Building artist Henry Jackson is exhibiting new work at a solo show called “Halted in Transition” at the Lew Allen Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Connie Harris Show in San Francisco

Noonan Building artist Connie Harris has a solo show at the Lobby Gallery, 455 Market St. at First Street in San Francisco, from June 23 through September 12, 2014. The exhibition “Connie Harris Pattern” was organized by Bonnie Earls-Solari, Independent curator who writes: ”The paintings are studies in color and pattern. The marks are hand made, not mechanized, so while repeating they are not identical. The differences in brush strokes and pigment tones create a surface that nearly quivers with verve and vitality "

Kim Frohsin Solo Show

NBA artist Kim Frohsin is showing a series of mixed media paintings over pinhole photography at a show entitled "Reliquaries: Exposed" at Gallerie Citi, in Burlingame, CA. The arcane series is created from a variety of media—acrylic paint, glazes, ink, collage, pencils, and dry pigment—built upon pinhole photographs taken by the artist between 2011 and 2013.

Relic considers things lost and found—memories, sacred objects, timeless treasures, and haunts—while Exposure references the underlying photograph. There is an aura that pervades these works of everyday objects that require the viewer to look closely, to take in the surface qualities and ambiguous abstractions, while simultaneously recognizing the underlying “real-life” image captured by the artist’s lens. Mysterious, clandestine, poetic, and nostalgic: There are endless surprises to be found in these small works.

Gallerie Citi is located in Burlingame at 1115 Howard Avenue. The show will be up from July 5 through August 30, with an artist's reception on Saturday, July 12, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. Here's a link to the Gallerie Citi web site.
