Francis Berry in SF Group Show

March 06, 2014 by admin in Outside Events

An upcoming group show at the Campfire Gallery in the Mission, called “Fractal”, will feature new works on paper by Noonan Building Artist Francis Berry. The show will run between March 12 and April 13, 2014, with an artist reception on Saturday, March 22, from 6pm to 9pm. You can get the address and directions from the gallery’s web site. From the gallery: “Fractal brings together three artists whose work is influenced by the underlying patterns found in our natural and urbanenvironments. Organic and man-made elements are reconfigured into visual landscapes that seek to convey both order and chaos.”

Here is Francis’s statement that accompanies his work in this show: “Rather than contextualizing man in landscape, I contextualize landscape in man. Recycled Landscape reduces human elements to verticals and natural elements to horizontals. By converting the rectangular elongation of the traditional landscape format to a more restrictive square, human design and nature are framed on equal terms. With multiple landscapes crowded in a square format and several horizons stacked on each other, each Recycled Landscape reflects a meditation on the kaleidoscopic interaction between nature and human design.”

Urban Air Market comes to Dogpatch

August 11, 2013 by admin in Outside Events

On Sunday, August 18th the Noonan Building Artists will be participating in Dogpatch's first Urban Air Market. The event will be held in the building on Pier 70 that formerly housed one of the City of San Francisco's tow yards and a police vehicle impound. Entrance to the event will be through what is normally a locked gate at 22nd and Illinois St. leading to a massive raw building on the waterfront.  For the first time ever and for one day only, this will be a community gathering place for art, fashion, food, drinks, and music. Urban Air Market is a curated marketplace for sustainable design featuring 150 independent designers of men’s, women’s, and kid’s clothing, accessories, jewelry and home décor. Participating designers are selected based on their quality, originality, cleverness, and method of sustainability in design. The organizers say they are inspired by “green” designers who are pushing the direction of fashion where it should be going.

The Noonan Building Artists will be contributing by setting up a small self-curated gallery with representative works from a number of the Building's artists. NBA members will be at the gallery all day to get the word out about our group, and the part we play in the Dogpatch community, giving the community at large an opportunity to get acquainted with this group of painters, printmakers, and mixed media artists.

Again, the date is Sunday, August 18, from 11am to 6pm. Entrance is at the corner of 22nd Street and Illinois.

Daniel Phill Solo Show

June 04, 2013 by admin in Outside Events

Noonan Building artist Daniel Phill is having a solo show in June at the Sandra Lee Gallery, 251 Post Street, suite 310, in San Francisco. The show will be up from June 4 through June 29, with the opening reception at the gallery on Thursday June 6, from 5:30 pm to 7:30pm. The press release from Sandra Lee Gallery follows:

Sandra Lee Gallery proudly announces the Vernation Series, a solo show by artist Daniel Phill. In this interpretive series, Phill aims to re-imagine nature, specifically vegetation and flowers, using abstraction and implications of space. Created using expressionist methods, the paintings are not merely representational, but gently suggestive of landscapes. Composing and dissolving forms and colors, Phill’s creative process is just as instinctive and liberated as his final images. Blending, dripping, and flinging the paint, Phill develops familiar shapes using an unconventional approach.

By combining artistic techniques, Phill embodies the dichotomies of color, form, and light found in the natural world. His process begins with a flat surface, pooling and mixing the colors to create a fluid base or background. He then moves the canvas upright to a wall, creating detailed pops of brilliant colors, often against a muted softer field. This method references the combination of loose subtleties and sharp intensities that make up our everyday visual perceptions. Shapes and colors mix and merge, fade and appear, often submerged under layers of pigment, washes and transparencies. The result is an image that exudes the depth and atmosphere reminiscent of a tangible landscape. Phill gives these paintings a textured, impassioned and radiant life.
